What Causes Autism?
It is likely that ASDs are not caused by a single factor. It is generally accepted that autism may be caused by brain abnormalities or a genetic event, but no single gene or group of genes can be attributed to all cases. Some have theorized that individuals may be predisposed to autism and that its development is influenced by environmental factors, but this has yet to be scientifically proven.
There is a consensus among most health professionals that the prevalence of ASDs is increasing because of changes in diagnostic criteria (a broader view of the spectrum), increasing awareness of ASDs and recognition that ASDs can be associated with other disorders.
