Current Grant Projects

Munroe-Meyer Institute, University of Nebraska Medical Center
Autism Action Partnership has granted money to support a variety of programs at the Munroe-Meyer Institute for several years including social skills clubs for children through young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders, early intervention services, a severe behavior program and sibling support groups. In addition, we have helped establish scholarship funds for a wide variety of programs operated at the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders.
University of Nebraska, Lincoln Barkley Center
With support from Autism Action Partnership, the new Barkley Memorial Center Autism Spectrum Disorders Project has embarked on a mission that will expand evidence-based intervention practices for young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The Autism Spectrum Disorders Project will implement three primary initiatives: educational intervention programs (including a new early childhood program called “Project EXCEED”), social and communication skills intervention groups and a diagnostic, multidisciplinary assessment clinic. In addition, the Project EXCEED will allow UNL students to benefit from hands on experiences of working with young children with autism in a traditional preschool environment.
Easter Seals of Nebraska
Autism Action Partnership has awarded money to Easter Seals of Nebraska to support an overnight summer camp in Fremont, Nebraska for children and young adults touched by Autism. In addition to two overnight camp sessions, Easter Seals provides mini respite camps throughout the state.
The Rose Theater
Autism Action Partnership supports drama classes offered by The Rose Theater for children and teens diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. The classes allow autistic youth and their siblings the opportunity to learn and discover their theatrical strengths in a comfortable environment during four eight-week sessions each year.
The Prevention Group
The Prevention Group is conducting studies to assess the effectiveness of videotaped modeling to teach high-functioning individuals with Autism to perform job-related social engagement skills in a retail setting while wearing a WalkAround® mascot costume. With the support of Autism Action Partnership, this project was developed in hopes that research could lead to increased opportunities for employment for young adults with autism in public safety departments and other positions across the country.
Pediatric Therapy Center
Autism Action Partnership supports social skills groups and a Therapeutic Listening library provided by the Pediatric Therapy Center.
Sac Museum
The Strategic Air and Space Museum has developed an exhibit entitled “Brain 2009” which will be displayed January 24 through May 3, 2009. Autism Action Partnership has sponsored a speaker, Dr. Fred Volkmar, M.D., to speak to parents and educators about Autism as part of this exhibit.
Autism Training Series
Autism Action Partnership matched a grant from Autism Speaks for UNMC Munroe Meyer Institute’s Department of Pediatric Psychology’s Nebraska Parent Training Workshop. This is an intensive ten-week series designed to educate, provide training and offer support to parents and caregivers of children with autism. The first series was completed in Kearney, Nebraska. A second series is being held in Lexington, Nebraska, and a third is planned for North Platte, Nebraska in spring of 2009.
