Transitions- A Social Skills Program for College-Aged Young Adults with Autism and Asperger Syndrome
Transitions is a new program designed to assist high-functioning young adults on the autism spectrum develop and refine social skills needed for their transition into adulthood.
Transitions is looking for some great peer role models for their new program. The program's objective is to assist young adults with Asperger Syndrome to develop their social skills as they transition from high school onto their next step in life. The peers for this program will need to be able to dedicate approximately 5 hours each month which includes attending two social activities per month (e.g., attending a UNO football game, having a good conversation, attending a UNO musical, lunch, etc.). The 5 hours also includes attending one meeting per month to discuss experiences and observations (food will be provided for the meetings).
The goal of "Transitions" is to provide positive social experiences that will allow for the development of social skills and friendships for both the participants and the peers. If you are interested in being a peer for the program for at least one semester, please contact Catelyn Newman for further information. The program will begin September 2nd.
For more information or to apply to participate in the program, contact Catelyn Newman at crnewman@unomaha.edu.
