To be eligible to participate, potential participants must be identified by an agency or professional as having an intellectual disability or having closely related intellectual disabilities such as functional limitations, both in general learning and adaptive skills such as recreation, work, independent living, self-direction, or self-care. Any individual on the autism spectrum will qualify to be an athlete.
Special Olympics Nebraska offers 19 different sports for individuals aged 6 to adulthood. A new program for 2 to 7-year-olds launched in November of 2008. Special Olympics Nebraska offers several “Unified” sports which brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities who train and compete as a team.
